European Poker 2008 Tour: The Grand Final Monte Carlo This Week

It is the biggest poker event to take place on the European continent but far - The European Poker 2008 Tour - Known as the EPT series. The biggest and best online poker rooms have launched satellites for their customers to attend the Grand Final in Monte Carlo this April 12 through 18.

The European Poker Tour (EPT) first began in 2004 as part of the worldwide Texas Hold 'em popularity. It is a series of poker tournaments similar to those in the World Poker Tour (WPT) and there all televised.

In seasons 1-3, the most different between the competing poker tours was the buy-in, its effect on the prize pool, with the EPT buy-ins about half the size of the WPT. This changed in season 4 when the buy-In's for most EPT events was increased to €8,000. (Due to increased popularity and lack of space in participating casinos).[1] At 2007 exchange rates, this is approximately equal to the US$10,000 which is the buy-in for most WPT events.

Furthermore, the final table is made up of 8 players not 6, as popularised by the WPT.

The tour was created by John Duthie, he was the winner of the inaugural Poker Million tournament. The show was first hosted by Caroline Flack, then announced in season 3 he was joined by Natalie Pinkham. Kara Scott was Season 4 host.

WPT Event in Reno-Less buy-ins

The buy-in has been raised to $7500 as we all know, for the event in Grand Sierra Resort, Reno. In 2007 there were 475 players participating, this year there was only 261 players.

It's got to be the higher buy-in due to the critical economical situation in the USA many hobby players are not willing to pay such a high price for a live tournament.

Still many pros appeared and the quality of poker and the participants was kept very high. For example, reconfirmed Phil Ivey, had very strong performances from the past weeks. He is chip leader with 179000 chips, followed by Eli Elezra (173800 chips), And with 131300 chips was Jordan Rich in fourth place.

Elezra has already won one WPT-title, which was the $10000 Mirage Poker Showdown. Jordan Rich has been on top form to, with good results in recent times. Also in the top 10 are Furthermore Tim West, Hasan Habib and Bill Edler.

27 players will make up the money ranks and the star prize contains an amount of $1873275 witch is smaller than last year. The winner will take $493815.

Cricket Star To Turn Poker Star

Shane Warne the Australian Test cricket spin bowling wizard will begin a new career as a poker professional, so reports said on Wednesday.

The test cricket star Warne, retired with a record 708 wickets, he had signed with online poker company to play the World Series of Poker, won by his Australian poker mentor Joe Hachem in 2005.

There are a lot of similarities but nothing will replace the 20 years of cricket in my life. Warne in his own words. "It's a game of skill that has a lot of analogies to cricket. You have to be very very disciplined."

Warne throughout his cricketing career attracted much controversy off the field as he did on it, to an Indian bookmaker and the phone text scandals and of course the breakup of his marriage over extramarital affairs.

Warne also served a ban for testing positive to a prohibited diuretic and also was charged with bringing the game into disrepute after criticising Sri Lanka's captain in 1999.

However, Warne was acknowledged by cricket fans around the world as one of the finest leg spin bowlers in the world and in 2000 was the only bowler to be selected as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Century.

Warne has been playing poker every week with friends for the last 5 years, for the most recent times he has been taking avice from Hachem, who he saw on a regular basis.

His first professional game of poker would be at this week's Aussie Millions tournament Melbourne. Warne "My attitude is I've got a lot more to learn about the game."

Warne is expected to play poker in the United States, New Zealand, South Africa and Great Britain this year, while filling a development role for Australia's promising spin bowlers.

Players invade Reno for World Poker Challenge

The World Poker Tour season returns for the sixth time today with the World Poker Challenge at Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nev.

The buy-in for the challenge is now $7,500, the buy-in has gone up for the first time in 5 years since the World Poker Challenge has joined. It's a massive 50% increase from the previous years.

With the move to a higher buy-in, it would appear that this year's edition of the World Poker Challenge will be the last to air on the World Poker Tour. When the World Poker Tour recently announced its schedule for Season 7, the Reno event was missing from its customary slot at the end of March.

Last year's World Poker Challenge final table represented a major breakthrough for J.C. Tran. After reaching the World Poker Tour television table but fell short four times previously, he had a second-place finish the month before at Commerce, J.C.Tran finally ascended from consistent performer to World Poker Tour Champion.
In a battle of players nicknamed "J.C.," Tran defeated Juan Carlos Alvarado to claim the title after entering heads-up play with a prohibitive chip lead.

Last year's final table were:

1st J.C. Tran $683,473
2nd Juan Carlos Alvarado $366,798
3rd David "The Dragon" Pham $182,260
4th Mark Seif $182,260
5th John Hom $136,695
6th Danny Wong $113,913

The list of well-known and players who have made the final table at the World Poker Challenge over the years is a fairly distinguished one. Besides last year's marquee finishers, Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein, Blair Rodman, Young Phan, Greg "FBT" Mueller, Paul "Eskimo" Clark, T.J. Cloutier, and 2007 WSOP Player of the Year Tom Schneider have all taken their shot at the big prize in Reno.

The World Poker Challenge is the next regular stop of the season for the World Poker Tour. After next week's event at Foxwoods, the season will end with the $25,000 World Poker Tour Championship.
