Last week on Betfairpoker after a new software update, players found a glitch in there 6 player sit and go tournaments which enabled a few players to get very rich very quickly. Players found that if on the first hand of a 6 player sit and go tournament they all went all in that the winner of the hand would get first place prize money and that all the others would get second place prize money!
Rumours of this glitch were soon found echoing through the poker forums and chat networks. Players flocked to Betfair in hope of taking advantage of this newfound hole in Betfair’s systems. Players were targeting the $1000 buy in tournaments (the largest Betfair offered) and taking advantage of this glitch.
While it is estimated that hundreds of these sit and go tournaments were played before Betfair could shut them down, they have not released an official statement as yet. It has been estimated that players took Betfair for between £1.7 and £4 million during a 1-3 hour period.
While players who tried to withdraw their loot after the tournaments in question were shut down had there accounts frozen, there must have been some players who got away with it as according to The Daily Telegraph about 20 Betfair players received an e-mail demanding the money back.
Betfair’s e-mail to these 20 or so players reads “You recently received payments from playing Sit & Go STTs [single table tournaments] on Betfair Poker in circumstances that resulted in greater payouts than intended.”
The e-mail went on to say "such games were incorrectly set up to pay everyone involved in certain all-in situations and this was exploited by you and others to generate substantial returns in a short space of time. As I’m sure you can understand, the winnings received as a result of this exploitation must be returned.”
It is yet to be seen if these player can keep their loot legally or weather they will be forced to return their winnings.
